My favorite vocal warm ups

I'm a classically trained singer. Even went to college for it. I actually came pretty close to attending a conservatory for opera and early music, but it cost a lot of money. I mean, A LOT. Plus, there's no guarantee of employment as a singer, or if you are employed, there's no guarantee of making enough money to live on.

For some people, this isn't an issue. And good for them! I admire people who love the art form so deeply, they're willing to go for it. But I'm not one of those people. I love shelter and food and paying off debts. So, I turned down the conservatory and haven't regretted it.

After college, I still continued to audition for opera and tried my hand at musical theater. I was still writing songs and always preferred singing my own stuff because - duh - it's mine, and they’re my stories.

That said, I found that no matter what I wanted to sing, I started warming up my body and voice with the same foundational warm ups.

These are warm ups I've borrowed from several teachers. They're gentle on the voice and, in my opinion, are the best to use when you haven't been singing for some time and want to get your vocal cords loose again.

Check out my latest video about them. I hope they're helpful to you!
